The story

Voorhees Township's Planning Board has approved a plan to turn Four Echelon Plaza, an empty eight-story office building on Laurel Road across from the former Echelon Mall, into 178 market-rate apartments. The developer is RP 201 Laurel Property Owner LLC of Wayne, Pennsylvania.

The building went up in the early 1970s as part of The Rouse Company's Echelon Town Center complex. It has 240,393 square feet over eight floors and was fully vacant by 2024, according to a redevelopment plan for the site. In February it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as an early example of precast concrete in modern architecture.

The 4.8-acre property also holds a two-story parking garage. Parking stays on the ground level and on half of the top level. The other half of the top level becomes outdoor space with a pool, sports courts and seating and lounge areas, according to the planning board engineer's project summary.

In 2024 the board approved another developer's plan to turn the building into senior apartments. No rents, start date or completion date have been reported.
